Rest In Paradise Dad

My dad passed away last Friday and I really don’t know how to process it. Last week I intended to write a blog about caring for the elderly and how hard it was to  care for  a strong-willed parent who refuses to give up driving. Last Thursday, my dad thought that he was strong enough to get behind the wheel of the car and I gave him the keys fully knowing that he would not make it out of the driveway. He didn’t and I think that’s when reality really set in for him and he realized that he was no longer independent.

The next day, he was gone.

I don’t know how to handle it quite yet. A part of me is relieved that he didn’t suffer. He lived over 88 years on this earth and I was blessed to have him for 55 of them.  He’s with my mom now and she probably asked him what took him so long as soon as he crossed over.  All 11 of his brothers and sisters have already crossed over as well as his parents and our Cocker Spaniel who loved my dad to pieces.  He is now in the presence of the Lord and I’m happy that he got to live his final days in the same house he purchased for his family in 1957.

And that I was able to care for him literally until his dying day.

I just miss him so much. He was my rock…the one person who would never let me fall…no matter what. In all my years and my many screw ups, not once did he ever judge me. He just picked me up, brushed me off and told me to start over.

He could be a pain in the ass…but he was my pain in the ass…and I loved him to infinity and beyond.

I was a daddy’s girl to the bittersweet end.

Living in the house that you grew up in can be a good and bad thing.  It’s great because it has so many memories tied into it.

It’s bad because…it has so many memories tied into it.

My dad used to sleep with his table lamp on…I still can’t turn it off.

My dad loved kool-aid and I was the only one who could fix it just like he liked it… I saw the kool-aid in the refrigerator and cried.

The holidays are right on our backs and I have to face this year without him. It’s gonna be hard.  I will probably do something in honor of him during that time…don’t know what yet.

My Nyx season is gonna be just a little less sweet. My dad looked forward to the Nyx Myx Ball so he could see what NavySeal and I were wearing.  He loved everything Nyx because he knew I did…and he supported any and everything I was ever into.

Saying goodbye to that kind of love and loyalty is hard.

I’m gonna try to keep living my best life to honor him and my mom though. I know that’s what they would want and so it shall be.

Happy Birthday To Me!

granddaughter birthday quotes New Happy 55th Birthday and many more birthday wishes

Today I get to celebrate my 55th birthday…the “double nickel.” It’s also my daughter’s birthday, but if she wants to talk about hers, she better start blogging.  LOL

It is not lost on me that this is another milestone in my life and I’m very grateful to be able to see this day. Many of my friends didn’t get to see 55 years of age.  I may not have everything I’d like to have in this world, but I have to say for the most part, I’m very happy.

I never thought that the best times of my life would be in my 50’s yet here they are. My kids are grown and following their own paths in life. I have a beautiful and smart granddaughter who is so loving, she would melt your heart. A great career (even though I’m ready for something new), I’m a float lieutenant in thee best all-female Mardi Gras Krewe in all of New Orleans, and my partner for life is the most amazing man. He is the perfect man for me in every way.

I’ve always been a late bloomer so, I guess this puts me right on schedule.

I’m looking forward to this new chapter in my life. I’m going to try to make it as interesting as humanly possible. Who knows, I may still be blogging and will be able to tell you all about it.

This year will be my 10th year blogiversary…never thought I’d make that one…yet here I am.  See y’all on the flip side…I’m going to celebrate with NOLA and all the people in town for the Essence Fest. Should be interesting…and crowded.

Love y’all.

Happy Birthday Stanka

khloe bdayMy Stanka Doodle recently turned 3 years old and I really don’t know where the time is going. She is getting so big so fast…I can’t keep up.  This year we had her party at Chuck E. Cheese and  my goodness…I went through sensory overload! They had so many people in that place. And it seems like you need to acquire a zillion tickets to get something half way decent over the counter.  We still had an awesome time though.  I can’t wait until her fifth birthday, we’re taking her to Disney World to celebrate.

That’s the fun part of having a grandkid…all the fun, none of the work.

Happy Birthday Stanka! We love you to the moon and beyond!

Hoppy Anniversary Moo!

If anyone would’ve come up to me and said I would be a fur mom to a rabbit I would have said they were out of their mind.

Yet, here I am…a fur mom to a rabbit.

moo6

I’ve been having my lil Moo Moo for 4 years now and before I was forced to take her  inherited her, I had no idea that rabbits had so much personality and were so smart.

I was able to potty train her in one day.

Who knew?!

I’ve been bitten by the “Bunny Bug”  so now I’m in the rabbit world…buying all sorts or rabbit stuff, learning bunny body language, and viewing bunnies on Instagram.

I spoil her rotten, but look at her!

She’s so cute!

moo5

The only downside to having her is that rabbits  LOVE to chew on anything.

I found out the hard way when she attacked my wall so I had to “bunny proof” her play area.

She’s a joy to have hopping around though. I wouldn’t trade her for anything.

Nyx Ride 2018

Yeah, I’m a month late and a dollar short, but I’m still here so…let me tell ya all about it!

It was cold. It was wet. It was windy.

nyx ride17

A cold, wet BayouCreole at the lineup waiting to roll.

And I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Even with the inclement weather, I still had a great time. I don’t know how the Captain does it, but the krewe just keeps getting better and better.

The pre-party was off the chain!  Over three thousand women filled the room.

For those who don’t already know, on the day of the ride, all of us meet for a pre-party before we roll on the streets of New Orleans. I love the pre-party because it’s something just for us before we roll and unleash all of our throws onto the city. We get to hang out with sisters we haven’t seen in a while. Some riders live out-of-state, some out of the country and it’s always wonderful being able to spend time with them and the rest of the sisters. Here are a few pics taken at the pre-party,

After the pre-party, we hit the streets and threw til it hurt! Man, I gotta tell ya…that cold/wet/windy combo wasn’t nothing nice! It’s all a part of parading though…some rides will have great weather, some not so great.

Float 17 in da house! Even in the cold and rain, these ladies were happy to be out there…how awesome it that?!

I wish I’d taken a picture of the crowd that was out there in the rain supporting us because they were the real MVP’s of the evening. At one point, the rain began to come down pretty hard…I was expecting people to pack up and leave. They did not budge…I was floored. I couldn’t throw to them fast enough.  Anything they asked for (expect for purses because I didn’t have anymore) I gave it to them. They more than deserved it.

Shout out to anyone who was out there in that weather with us! You are the real deal!

The krewe is still  young (7 years old) and has already topped 3,000 women riders. I’ve been a member for 5 years and this was my first year as a lieutenant. People kept asking me how I liked being in that position. My response was always, “it’s like breathing” because it feels so natural. When you have a passion for something, it doesn’t feel like work.I have no plans to ever leave the krewe. When I’m so old that I can’t climb on the float anymore, then I’ll stop riding.

Nyx has made history in a lot of ways, but what really impresses me the most is the inclusivity. The fact that so many women of color ride in the krewe (and are float lieutenants) speaks volumes. And that inclusivity is visible from the streets. That means a lot when you are a child out there trying to catch throws. I’m not going to even talk about my childhood…when my own kids were young, they didn’t see anyone that looked like them on the floats (and if they had blacks in the krewe, they were few and far between) and my kids are in their 20’s.  It’s nice to be in a krewe where diversity is seen.

nyx ride13

If you’ve never experienced Mardi Gras in New Orleans before and plan on coming one day, make your reservations so you can catch us! You will not be disappointed! We throw like crazy! See the picture below for evidence…lol.

Future Nyx Sister

I’m looking forward to riding in 2019.  We ride on Feb.27th…now, I just checked the weather for that day and this year it was clear skies and 72 frigging degrees at night! Imma need the weather gawds to do a repeat for next year.

Until then…

HAIL NYX!
